ELLENSBURG, Wash. - In a weekend that both Saint Martin's and Central Washington combined for 80 runs on 102 hits,
Benjamin Wadowski's one run six inning showing proved to be the key performance in the series in which the Saints earned two critical victories.
Game One
Central Washington (23-15, 17-11 GNAC) jumped on Saints (12-20, 9-15) starter
Aaron Shoup, hanging an eight spot on him in the second inning; however, only four of the runs were earned against him.
The Saints found life in the third inning, scoring four runs, three coming on a bases-clearing double by
Trevor Young. Next inning, the Saints rallied from eight runs down to tie the game after
Brandon Witherspoon,
Austin Feist and
Adam Eskil combined to bring in four runs.
Central regained a one run lead in the fifth before the Saints completed the comeback attempt in the bottom half of the fifth. RBI singles from Witherspoon and Sordahl gave SMU their first lead of the game at 10-9.
CWU once again quickly responded, regaining the lead on a two run home run from the shortstop Christopher Dalto in the sixth inning. Witherspoon collected his third RBI on his third hit of the ballgame with a single to right field, knotting the game at 11 apiece. The Saints took a 13-11 lead later in the inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by the Wildcats.
However, Central, down to their final two outs, came from behind, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to secure a 14-13 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Shoup pitched the first three innings for the Saints before being lifted for
Mickey Walker who threw three innings in relief.
Tanner Inouye pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and handled the ball over to
Luke Hare (2-2) who ended his 12 inning scoreless streak after giving up three runs, one earned.
Adam Eskil finished the final two outs.
Game Two
With nearly arm exhausted from the previous three games, head coach
Ken Garland turned to Wadowski to start the final game of the series. Wadowski (2-0) rose to the challenge and provided a much needed effort, allowing only one run over six innings on seven hits and striking out three against a Wildcats' offense that had plated 37 runs in three games.
The Saints provided Wadowski with some early offense, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first inning, highlighted by a two RBI single from Young. A RBI double from Shaan Kothari and RBI groundout from
Micah McNicoll accounted for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Trevor Young capped off his impressive six hit, eight RBI weekend with a no-doubt homerun over the right center fence, his second of the season.
Central got on the board with their only run of the game coming in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly from Yi-an Pan brought home Dalto.
The final nail in the coffin came in the sixth inning of the form of a three run home run from Feist to highlight his seven hit, 10 RBI, seven run four game performance.
Sordahl proved to be a nearly impossible out over the series, collecting eight hits, and reached base 13 times while Eskil boosted his season stats with an eight hit, nine RBI series.
Up Next: The Saints return home in hopes of playing of their first games on their home field all season with a doubleheader against Western Oregon on Tuesday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m.
