Saints Baseball Splits At MSUB Behind Dominant Shoup

BILLINGS, Mont. - Aaron Shoup struck out 11 Yellowjackets over eight dominant innings to lead the Saints into a critical four-game series against Montana State Billings that began with a doubleheader split on Saturday.

Game One

The Saints (13-21, 10-16 GNAC) provided early run support, picking up a run after a bases-loaded walk to Steven Sordahl, who later scored on a balk to give them a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

The Yellowjackets (15-25, 13-17) tacked on their first run of the game in the third inning after a groundout to third base drove in Hartgraves from third.

Adam Raczok kicked-off the fourth inning with a RBI single to left center, driving in Shaan Kothari. Brandon Witherspoon capped-off the three run inning with a two RBI single to center field, bringing home Raczok and Micah McNicoll, extending the Saints' lead to 5-1.

With runners on second and third, a RBI ground out from Montana State Billings cut the score to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

Austin Feist, coming off a massive weekend at Central Washington, put the final nail in the coffin with a solo home run, his third of the year, to left field in the top of the seventh.

Aaron Shoup (3-3) provided the Saints with one of their pitching performances all year, going eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while punching out 11 on 126 pitches. Shoup struck out the side in the first and recorded two K's in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Luke Hare earned his fourth save of the season, ending the game with two runners in scoring position on a strike out.

Game Two

The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the second game in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Alec Hagerman, scoring Raczok and giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets responded with the equalizer in the bottom of the third on a home run by right fielder Garcia before taking a 2-1 lead on another solo shot by shortstop Golden in the fifth inning.

Saint Martin's quickly answered back in the top of the sixth with a bases-loaded  sacrifice fly from Trevor Young, driving in pinch-runner Nico Marchio to knot the game at 2-2.

MSUB's offense came through in the sixth inning with multiple two RBI doubles down the foul lines, highlighting a four run inning and the eventual 6-2 victory to split the doubleheader.

Tanner Inouye got the start for the Saints in the seven-inning game, going 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two Yellowjackets. Mickey Walker (2-6) picked up the loss after throwing 1.1 innings in relief, giving up four runs, one earned on three hits and punched out three batters.
