Baseball Sweeps Crusaders to Secure Series Win

LACEY, Wash. - Behind dominate pitching from Benjamin Wadowski and Luke Hare, the Saints swept Northwest Nazarene to clinch the series victory on their home field.

Game One

Northwest Nazarene (21-25, 19-17 GNAC) struck first with three runs in the top of the second inning, two coming on a throwing error by the Saints.

Saint Martin's (16-26, 13-21) responded in the bottom half of the inning with an Adam Eskil home run, his team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Steven Sordahl tied the game over the next two innings, starting with a RBI single in the third and then a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Brandon Witherspoon supplied the clutch hit with a single to center field, scoring Kahi Hirano and Micah McNicoll, and gave SMU the 5-3 lead.

Sordahl struck again in the sixth with another RBI single, plating Hirano again and extending the lead to 6-3.

Northwest Nazarene made a ninth inning comeback attempt with two solo home runs but Ryan Dorney shut the door with pop up to Hirano.

Benjamin Wadowski (3-0) earned the win after settling down in the third and pitched eight innings, allowing three runs, all unearned, on six hits and four strike outs. Dorney earned his first save of the year after pitching the ninth inning.

Game Two

Adam Eskil provided the only run support of the game with a RBI double to left center, scoring Austin Feist in the first inning.

Luke Hare was called on to get his first start of the season and rewarded head coach Ken Garland and company with 4.1 shut out innings, giving up two hits while punching out five Crusaders. Hare dropped his ERA to 1.65, the lowest of the team.

Mickey Walker was called in the fifth inning to work out of a jam, with runners on first and second and one out. With one pitch, Walker forced the classic 6-4-3 double play.

Walker relied on his defense again to work out of the sixth inning jam, with the bases loaded and two outs. Alec Hagerman, who entered the game for his defense in the sixth, made a running, over the shoulder catch at the left field wall to keep the shut out and victory alive.

Another 6-4-3 double play helped clinch the victory and 2.2 inning save for Walker, his second of the season.

The combined shut out was the first shut out for Saint Martin's since April 25, 2015 against Central Washington, which was a 1-0 victory as well.

Up Next: The Saints remain at home to host GNAC leading Western Oregon on Tuesday, May 2 at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both games.
