LACEY, Wash. - Lifted by a game-winning goal in the 70th minute by
Jason Fairhurst, Saint Martin's claimed the 2-1 exhibition victory over NAIA opponent Northwest Christian on Tuesday.
Kyle Witzel quickly gave the Saints a 1-0 lead after only 19 seconds, scoring on a Beacons' turnover from a couple yards, wrapping the ball around the left post. The Beacons responded in the 28th minute with a goal of their own to knot the match at 1-1 going into halftime.
Austin Derheim connected with Fairhurst on a left to right pass to the middle of the box, with Fairhurst putting the ball in the back of net from 10 yards out. The Saints held on to the 2-1 score despite a set piece and shot on goal by the Beacons in the final minutes.
Parker Elliot got the start at keeper, going the first 61:38 minutes, allowing one goal with three saves.
Dylan Shaw recorded the final 28:22 shut out minutes with one save.
Northwest Christian led in the shots catergory with nine compared to Saints' seven and shots on goal, five to four. The Saints recorded four saves to the Beacons' two while Northwest Christian took three corners to SMU's one.
