Saints Fall In Road Match 2-1 To Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Brandon Madsen scored a goal for the second straight match; however, it would not be enough as the Saints fell 2-1 against Cal State San Bernardino on the road.

The Saints (0-4) began the match on the offensive, with a header from Stephen Todd Murray JR went barely high. Madsen, just a minute later, got a shot off that was on target and saved by the Coyotes' (2-3) keeper. Shots from Madsen and Kyle Witzel continued pressure on the CSUSB defense until in the 20th minute, Witzel's ball which was saved, popped out of the keeper's hands and Madsen scored on the rebound. His team-leading second goal of the season.

The Saints held onto the lead for 15 minutes before the Coyotes tied up the match on a rebound, close right side of the box. Five minutes later in the 40th minute, CSUSB gained the lead when Hieu Ngo was awarded a free kick and capitalzed with his first goal of the season.

Out of halftime, the Saints had opportunities to tie the match at 2-2 with a Witzel and Sebastian Navarro shot being saved along with McKray John's header going over the crossbar. Griffin Small recorded a clean sheet in the second half, making three saves, and stomping the Coyotes advances to put the game away. Ultimately, the score remained 2-1 in favor of Cal State San Bernardino.

"We look at this game as part of our weekend in Southern California as a whole; the only thing wrong with the trip is the score line," said head coach Rob Walker. "We put a lof of good soccer together in very difficult conditions. We are really making positive strides. Our defending has been good for the most part and today we were happy with our offensive production. We're looking forward to returning home and playing against Hawaii Pacific on Sunday."

Madsen and Nick Phillips led the Saints with three shots each while Witzel, and Navarro added two shots respectively. The Saints out shot CSUSB 12-10 with both teams recording six shots on goal. Small played all 90 minutes at keeper for SMU, allowing two goals and stopping three shots. CSUSB finished the match with five saves compared to the Saints four, while both teams took six corner kicks and CSUSB committed 16 fouls to the Saints 10.

"As a team, I think we grew a lot this weekend," said Mamadou Leigh. "Our team chemistry  was much better and I think the way we played reflected that. Unfortunately, we didn't get the results we wanted but there was a lot of positives to take away and that will add to our growth throughout the season."

Saint Martin's returns home to the SMU Soccer Field for their first home match of the regular season against Hawaii Pacific on September 17 at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for the match via smusaints.com for free.
