SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Rebecca Mitchell recorded 20 kills to lead the Saints in a five-set victory (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 26,28, 15-7) over Adelphi University at the second day of the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic.
Adelphi (0-3) used a 9-1 run to take an early 12-6 advantage over the Saints (2-1). The Saints would take the lead later in the set backed by a 8-1 run, highlighted by kills from Mitchell,
Megan Vernoy and
Nicolette Nesbitt. Adelphi responded with a 7-2 run to close out the set and take an 1-0 lead.
An 8-2 run for the Saints gave them a 13-8 lead, before Adelphi battled back to tie the set at 15-15. Capitalizing on Adelphi's errors and kills from Vernoy, SMU regained the lead and a block by
Kamille Langford closed out the 25-21 set for the Saints.
The Saints dominated the third set from the first serve, with kills from Mitchell, Vernoy and Langford, SMU took a 3-2 lead and never looked back. The Saints led throughout the entire set from that moment on, and Mitchell's kill secured the second set victory for the them 25-18.
Adelphi forced a fifth and final set after clinching a close fourth set 28-26. In the final set, the Saints relied on Mitchell, Vernoy and Langford to make some kills and give the Saints an early lead.
Rachel Gondrezick, followed up her 16-kill performance from yesterday with 16 again and two kills in the final set that gave the Saints an 8-5 lead and sparked the final 10-2 run to seal the victory for Saint Martin's.
"Adelphi is an east coast powerhouse with maybe one of the best middles we will face all year," said head coach
Jon Killingbeck. "Our staff is so proud of our team right now. Again we won this game because of our team effort."
Mitchell led the game with 20 kills, followed by Gondrezick with 16 and Vernoy at 12. Vernoy also served four aces. Langford ended the day with seven total blocks. Nesbitt tallied a sesaon-high 49 assists and
Courtney Misner collected 19 digs.
The Saints recorded 73 points, 58 kills, seven aces, eight blocks, 55 assists and 84 digs as an unit.
Saint Martin's will conclude their four game series in California with a match-up with host team Cal State San Marcos at 6:00 p.m.
