Double Overtime Golden Goal Stuns Saints At Home

LACEY, Wash. – Rose Robbins picked an incredible time to net her first collegiate goal, scoring with just 27 seconds left on the board to tie the match and send it to overtime. The Saints and Wildcats were held scoreless in the first overtime period, before Central Washington connected on the goal in the 103rd minute to stun SMU 3-2.

Shea McKnight got the scoring started with her fourth goal of the year in the 15th minute. Central Washington (2-6-4, 2-3-2) managed to equalize the match in the 32nd minute on a goal from Makinze Packwood. Packwood struck again in the second, in the 80th minute, in what looked like to be the winning goal. Off the corner, the Saints (5-9-0, 1-7-0) found Robbins at the top of the box, who punched in the goal to send the match to overtime. Three minutes into the final overtime period, Lexsi Manning ended the match with the golden goal and the 3-2 win for the Wildcats.

The Saints, who were still looking for their first goal at home in the conference season, finally found their answer, with McKnight giving them the early lead. On a ball from Jolene Kvinsland, McKnight worked from the far side of the box to the near post on her shot, hitting her fourth goal of the year. The Wildcats regrouped after the goal and put the pressure on the Saints' defense. Central connected on eight shots in the half, and saw Packwood's attempt in the 32nd minute hit the back of the net.

After halftime, with the score 1-1, the Wildcats continued the pressure, taking 12 second half shots. The Saints' defense held strong for a majority of the second half, before Packwood placed a perfect shot, just over the hands of Ali Koehler, to take the 2-1 lead.

In what looked like the final chance for the Saints, with a corner in the 90th minute, SMU had to score to keep the game alive. Off of the corner, LeAnn Phanakhone swung the ball out to Robbins, who stepped into the shot, hitting through defense and tying the match at 2-2.

The first overtime period was a quiet one, compared to the first 90 minutes, with Central Washington claiming the only shot attempt, but missed wide. In the second overtime period, in the 103rd minute, the golden goal came from Manning, who connected on a ball near the middle of the box, past the diving arms of Koehler.

The Saints as team collected seven shots, with McKnight and Kylee Sarchett ending with two each. Robbins, Kiersten Madsen, and Jessica Moskowitz each had one shot, with all their attempts landing on goal. Koehler faced 22 shots, making four saves, with three team saves, while allowing three goals.

The Saints have the weekend off before traveling north of the border to face Simon Fraser on Tuesday, October 16. The match is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
