LACEY, Wash. – An early goal by
Jessica Moskowitz and a bend but never break defense by the Saints, looked like it would result in a victory. Hawaii Hilo had other ideas, scoring in the 86th minute to tie and 95th minute to stun SMU 2-1 in overtime.
Moskowitz connected on her first goal of the season from 10 yards outside of the box, clearing the keeper's hands and hitting top shelf.
Sara Christensen recorded eight first half saves and stopped the first 21 shots by Hawaii Hilo (4-1-2). The Vulcans' final two shots proved to be the difference makers, handing the Saints (4-6-0) their fifth straight loss.
The Vulcans applied offensive pressure throughout most of the match, winning the shot category 23 to 9. Despite the pressure, the Saints managed to turn the tide and make a push up the middle in the 23rd minute. The ball found its way to Moskowitz, who made a defender miss and punched home the goal, just over the outstretched arms of UHH's goalie. The Saints' defense, anchored by Christensen, continued to fight off attempts and gave SMU a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Late in the second half, the Saints had an opportunity to put the game out of reach, when
Jade Castaneda's first shot bounced off the crossbar, and her put back went high. Hawaii Hilo was able to use the second chance to work home the equalizer in the 86th, after the ball deflected off Christensen's hands, right to the feet of the Vulcan attacker.
In final blow came five minutes into the first overtime period, after a corner piece found an open Vulcan in the middle of the box.
Castaneda led the team in shots with four, while
Jolene Kvinsland came off the bench for two. Moskowitz,
Kiersten Madsen and
Gloria Petri also recorded one shot. Christensen ended the match with nine saves on 23 shots faced.
The Saints have a quick turnaround, traveling to Montana State Billings for a match on Thursday. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
