No. 1 Simon Fraser Knocks Off Saints 3-0

BURNABY, CANADA – The Saints had a tall task ahead of them, traveling to top-ranked Simon Fraser, which proved to be as difficult as it was billed. Simon Fraser limited the Saints' offensive opportunities and came away with a 3-0 win.

The Saints did not record their first shot of the match until the second half, and were outshot in the game 13-to-3. Their only shot on goal came in the closing seconds of the match. Simon Fraser scored three goals in the first half to take a comfortable lead and cruised in the second half to the three points.

The Clan's goals all came within six minutes of each other, scoring in the 14th, 15th and 20th minutes. The first goal came on a header from Mamadi Camara, before Matteo Polisi netted his 16th goal of the year just a minute later. The final goal came once again off the foot of Polisi, scoring off a scramble in the box, and punching the ball past the hands of Dylan Shaw, who got the start at goalie for SMU.

In the second half, the Clan backed off the pressure, and the Saints' defense made adjustments to hold Simon Fraser scoreless for nearly 70 minutes. The Saints' first shot of the match came in the 54th minute when Brandon Madsen just missed wide of the net. Saint Martin's put some pressure on the Clan in the closing minutes, with a header by Alexis Lopez missing wide and Oscar Aguilar's shot landing on goal.

"In our opening, we said that there was no better place to be in D-II soccer than playing SFU," said head coach Rob Walker. "Our plan looked good initially, but one misstep and a good Simon Fraser team will pick you apart and that was the case through their ejection. We need to polish up our attacking play as we play our final three games of the season. Collin LaBranche, and Jose Marquez played well together in the back and Stephen Todd Murray JR had a solid game at left back."

The Saints return home for their final home match of the season, a week from Saturday, against Montana State Billings. Senior day will take place just before the match, which is set to begin at noon. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
