Baseball Picks Up First Win In Split With Hawaii Pacific

WALPAHU, Hawaii – Backed by 18 hits and 12 runs, along with a strong outing by Tanner Inouye, the Saints picked up their first win of the season, splitting a doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific, 12-6 and 6-1, on Friday.
 
The final out of the doubleheader came at 2:31 a.m. PST after a long 18-innings of baseball; however, the Saints (1-5) were able to piece together their best performance of the season in the 12-6 win before Hawaii Pacific (4-2) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game.
 
Hawaii Pacific struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second; however, the Saints responded with six straight runs to gain control of the game. Starting in the third inning, Bryant Nakagawa doubled to left center, scoring two runs, and putting Saint Martin's on top 2-1. Austin Feist followed it up with an RBI double to left center, scoring Nakagawa. RBI singles by Colton Peha and Adam Eskil resulted in two more runs for the Saints, extending their lead to 5-1 after three.
 
Ryan Colvin added one run in the fifth on a sac-fly before HPU scored one in the bottom half of the fifth. The Saints continued to build their lead in the six inning, capitalizing on HPU errors, and an RBI single for Feist.
 
Saint Martin's picked up runs in the seventh inning and two more in the ninth to cruise to their first win of the season, 12-6. The Saints collected 18 hits, led by Feist with four hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Oshiro finished with three hits and three runs along with Kahi Hirano's three hits and two runs.
 
Tanner Inouye (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, going six strong innings, allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits with seven strike outs and one walk. Zach Robinson pitched 1.1 innings in relief before Garrison Ritter closed out the final 1.2 innings of work hitless.
 
Hawaii Pacific's pitching responded well in the second game of the doubleheader, holding the Saints hitless through the first six innings, and allowing 18 hits in the first game.
 
The Sharks scored two runs in the first inning on a double down the right field line. Hawaii Pacific added to their lead in the fifth and sixth inning, score two runs each; extending their lead to 6-0 after seven.
 
Despite the Saints not recording a hit until the seventh inning, SMU had chances to score in the game, In the second inning, a walk and two errors loaded the bases for Hirano, who struck out swinging to close out the inning. The Saints had runners in scoring position again in the fourth and fifth inning on walks and errors, yet never managed to do damage.
 
Saint Martin's finally broke through in the seventh, when Jake Leonard broke up the no-hit bid with a double to left center. Micah McNicoll singled to center, followed by a sac-fly by Hirano to put SMU on the board.
 
Mickey Walker (0-2) picked up the loss after going the first five innings of the game for SMU. Walker allowed four runs, three earned on four hits, while walking one and striking a season-high eight batters. Benjamin Wadowski pitched the final three innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
