DeHan Extra Inning Hit Lifts Saints To 10-8 Victory Over Humboldt State

TURLOCK, Calif. – After the Saints crushed their way to a 8-2 lead after the top of the fourth, but Humboldt State managed to tie the game at 8-8, sending the game to extra innings. Nicki DeHan delivered the game-winning hit with the bases loaded to carry the Saints to a 10-8 victory.

Humboldt State jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The Saints quickly responded, in the top of the second, scoring three runs. Lauren Diuco got SMU on the board with a two RBI single up the middle, followed by Tessani Dixon's RBI single to shortstop.

The Saints continued to add to their lead, scoring two runs in the top of the third. Kim Nelson doubled to left field, scoring Regan Byrd, before Alyssa French drove home Courtney Baird.

Next inning, the Saints loaded the bases for Nelson, who worked a walk, bringing home Dixon. Later in the fourth, Nicki DeHan came through with a clutch single, through the left side, scoring two more runs, and extending the lead to 8-2.

It looked like the Saints had their fourth win of the Tournament of Champions locked up; however, Humboldt State used a four-run fourth inning, followed by two more in the sixth to tie the game.

The game went to extra innings, where a runner starts on second base. After the Saints failed to bunt the runner to third, Byrd singled to left, putting runners on the corners. Humboldt walked Nelson to load the bases for DeHan. Once again, DeHan delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit, singling down the left field line. Two runs scored and the Saints led 10-8.

Humboldt State managed to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth; however, Lauren Maley sealed the victory with a groundout to third base.

Lindsay Miller got the start in the circle, going 3.2 innings after giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits. Lauren Maley (8-8) came in from the bullpen to throw the final 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and one strikeout.
