Saints Use Long Ball, Dominating Pitching To Split Road Series - In the opening bill, Streby went seven strong innings, allowing three runs, two earned before a ninth inning rally by the Nighthawks tied the game. Oshiro collected his first collegiate home run with the go-ahead solo blast in the top of the tenth. In the second game, Northwest Nazarene jumped on the Saints for 10 early runs; however, Oshiro put the Saints on the board with a three-run home run but the effort was not enough as SMU fell 10-4. On the second day, Oshiro tied the game in the fifth inning of the first doubleheader with a solo home run before Feist put SMU on top with his own blast in the sixth. The Saints scored insurance runs in the eighth and ninth while Inouye craved through the Nighthawks' lineup. In the second game, Feist connected for his second home run of the day; however, the Nighthawks rattled five straight runs to secure the split.
Inouye, Oshiro Sweep GNAC Player of the Week Awards -
Ryne Oshiro and
Tanner Inouye swept the GNAC Player of the Week Awards after hitting .625 average and three home runs, and a seven strikeout complete game for the duo respectively. Oshiro began the four-game series with perfect timing. In the 10th inning, game tied, Oshiro connected on a ball to right field for his first collegiate home run, leading the Saints to a 5-4 victory. He went on in the series to hit two more home runs, driving six RBIs, while hitting 10-for-16 (.625 avg). Oshiro scored six times, with one double and worked three walks, including an intentional walk. Inouye helped the secure the series split on the road, throwing in the first game of the second doubleheader. Going the distance for the first time in his career, Inouye managed to strike out a season high seven batters. He only allowed two runs, one earned, to score on six hits.
Mickey Walker Showing Ace Like Stuff – During his best outings of the season, two no-decisions against Northwest Nazarene and Montana State Billings, he threw 15.0 innings, allowing one run on 10 hits, three walks and 13 strike outs. Walker has established himself as not only one of the best pitchers for the Saints, but also in the conference. He struggled in his start at Central Washington but threw the ball better against Concordia. Walker ranks in the top-ten in Opposing Batting Average (.248), Innings Pitched (39.0), Strikeouts (35), Runs Allowed (24), and Walks Allowed (15) in the GNAC.
Clark Streby Provides 1-2 Punch – The transfer from Walla Walla CC has given Saint Martin's a legitimate 1-2 punch, with
Mickey Walker, in their starting rotation. In 40.2 innings of work, Streby is seventh in the GNAC with a 3.98 ERA. He ranks tied for third in earned runs allowed (16), and fourth in runs allowed (19), fourth walks allowed (12), and fifth in strikeouts (37). Streby has claimed three of the six wins for the Saints, and enters the week winning three of his last five starts.
Tanner Inouye Establishing His Presence In GNAC – Before the third inning of his start against MSUB, where he allowed five runs, In 21.2 innings of work, Inouye had been one of the most efficient pitchers for Saint Martin's, holding an ERA of 2.12. He finally qualified to be on the GNAC leaderboard after tossing a complete game against NNU. Inouye ranks fifth in the GNAC in ERA at 3.63.
Steven Sordahl Picking Up Right Where He Left Off – As one of the best hitters for the Saints in 2017, Sordahl once again is near the top of SMU's batting average. Hitting .287 in 32 games, Sordahl has recorded 35 hits, with three double, two triples, 14 RBIs, 12 walks and five stolen bases.
Austin Feist Slugging The Ball – After a slow start, the All-Conference selection from 2017 found his grove in GNAC play. Feist enters the week hitting .298, while slugging .496, which ranks 12th best in GNAC. Feist's eight doubles not only are tied for the team lead but rank tied for seventh in GNAC. Feist also leads the team with four home runs, 19 RBIs, and tied for 11th in GNAC with 36 hits.
Ryne Oshiro Provides Pop Up The Middle – The freshman had himself a breakout series against Montana State Billings, going 7-for-14, with one double and three RBIs. He followed it up with a season highlight performance against NNU, hitting .625 with three home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored. He enters the week leading the team in batting average (.316), and leads the team lead in runs scored (22), which is tied for 10th in the GNAC.
