LACEY, Wash. – For the second time this week, the Saints hosted one of the top ranked teams in the country, taking on #10 Concordia, falling 3-0 on their home field.
The Cavaliers' (7-0-1, 4-0-0) defense, ranked among the top in the country, proved their might against the Saints (4-5-0, 0-4-0), limiting SMU to only three shots in the match and none on goal. Concordia scored only once in the first half, but was able to open up the match in the second half and clinched the 3-0 victory.
The first goal for Concordia came in the 23rd minute off of a double assist, when Gabrielle Ewing punched one in from the middle of the box. The Saints were able to limit the Cavaliers' chances in the first half and keep the score to only 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Cavaliers found some more offense in the 63rd minute, on a top shelf goal from Kyra Radcliffe just found its' way over keeper's hands
Ali Koehler. The final dagger came in the 72nd minute when leading goal scorer for Concordia, Sydney Van Steenberge connected on a ball from the top of the box.
"Today was a very well fought and played game by our team," said head coach
Heather Cato. "We had to deal with things that are out of our control, dictating key moments in the game. Yet despite that, we battled and showed what we are all about. So proud of this team and excited for what the future holds."
The Saints' three shots came from the feet of Kylie Sarchett,
Kiersten Madsen and
Shea McKnight. Koehler got the start in goal, facing 22 shots, making 10 saves, while allowing all three goals.
