Kemp's Golden Goal Marks First Win of Season - Overtime soccer and the Saint Martin's Saints, a trend that has been the headliner for SMU in 2019. In the home opener against Whitman, the Saints were tied 1-1 heading into extra time, but on Monday it only took 28 seconds for the drama to unfold. On a ball from
Shea McKnight, into the middle of the box,
Kendall Kemp made the most of her first collegiate goal. Kemp punched in the ball from seven yards out and sealed the victory with the golden goal, lifting SMU to their first win of the season.
Who Doesn't Love Free Soccer – Saint Martin's has provided lots of overtime soccer in 2019, with four of their first five matches heading into extra time.
The Race To The Top – Shea McKnight and
Kiersten Madsen will be neck-and-neck all season in career goals scored. Entering the week, McKnight is currently 8th all-time at 19 and Madsen is 9th all-time at 17.
Key Timing For First Goals – Freshman
Maddie Wolff and
Kendall Kemp highlighted their first home match of their collegiate careers with goals against Whitman to help the Saints to a 2-1 victory.
Fresh On The Scene – Freshman goalkeepers
Ali Campigotto and
Sophie Mendoza quickly have made an impact at Saint Martin's. The two have combined for 50 saves, which is third in the GNAC entering the week. Campigotto's 5.2 saves per match is one of only three goalies in the conference to surpass the 5.0 or more mark.
Fire Away – In the Saints' 3-1 victory over Warner Pacific, Saint Martin's broke the school record for most shots in a single match with 34.
Setting Records – In 2018, the Saints set a school record for the most wins against non-conference opponents, racking up four wins. Saint Martin's knocked off Corban, Northwest Christian, Holy Names and Evergreen State.
Saints Picked 9th In Preseason Poll - Nationally ranked Western Washington led the poll with all nine first place votes for 81 total votes. Seattle Pacific (68 votes) and Concordia (65) battled for second and third place. Simon Fraser (47), Central Washington (46), and Northwest Nazarene (36) made up the middle of the GNAC. Western Oregon (28), Montana State Billings (21), and Saint Martin's (12) rounded out the final three spots.
2019 Saints At A Glance - The Saints return two of their top goalers from last season in Madsen and McKnight. The two combined for nine goals and five assists for a total of 23 points. The two forwards were a large part of the Saints' offensive eruption at the beginning of 2018, scoring six goals in the opening four games.
Head coach
Heather Cato will also rely heavily on returning defenders Robbins and
Olivia Bianco. Robbins, an All-Conference selection from two years ago, started in all 18 matches, and logged over 1,500 minutes on the pitch. Bianco, who also saw over 1,000 minutes of action last year, assisted on two goals and helped lead the Saints' defense to three shutout victories.
Other notable players returning for SMU this year is forward
Natalie Brown, midfielders
LeAnn Phanakhone,
Jolene Kvinsland, and
Jessica Moskowitz. Brown, who scored two goals last year, will be the third highest returning goal scorer in 2019. Moskowitz played in 17 matches for over 900 minutes, scored one goal and was credited for one assist. Phanakhone, and Kvinsland bring over 1,800 minutes of experience in their first season at Saint Martin's last year to the midfield this year.
The Saints bring back senior goalkeeper
Sara Christensen, who made six starts in goal last year. Christensen made 37 saves, including a season-high of nine. In her six matches, Christensen won two, and allowed 1.97 goals per game with a .755 save percentage.
