BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A second half offensive explosion by the nationally ranked Western Washington Vikings proved fatal in the Saints' 6-0 loss on the road Tuesday night.
It wasn't until the 32nd minute that the Vikings finally managed to squeeze a goal past
Ali Campigotto, who ended the match with a career high 11 saves. Western Washington scored one more goal before the half ended in the 43rd minute to go up 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, a 12-minute span for the Vikings resulted in four goals to put the match out of reach. The Saints connected for three shots in the match, with two landing on target; however, Western Washington was able to knock down the attempts and hold SMU scoreless.
"Sometimes the score and stat sheet don't show the whole picture of how a game played out," said head coach
Heather Cato. "Our team played inspired and fearless against a very good WWU team. The wind assisted corner, the PK, and an own goal took the wind out of our sail a bit. However, I was very proud of the team we were today."
The Saints continue their road trip, heading to Seattle Pacific on Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. kick off. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
