Vikings' Last Second Goal Stuns Saints In 1-1 Road Draw

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It looked like Brandon Madsen's 10th goal of the season in the 51st minute was going to be difference maker in the Saints' match against Western Washington. However, with time expiring, a last chance effort by WWU managed to find the back of the net with just one second left on the clock to force a 1-1 draw.

In what seemed to be a matchup between two of the top three teams in the GNAC, a victory of either side would be consider monumental towards postseason consideration. The Saints were on the cusp of victory and looked to all but have sealed up the victory. After clearing the ball outside of the box, and the clock running out, Nick Morgan of the Vikings, turned and rifled a ball back towards the net. The ball carried over everyone, and managed to strike the far post, over the hands of SMU keeper Dylan Shaw to stun everyone and clinch a draw.

Madsen scored his 10th goal of the season, becoming the fastest SMU player in school history to reach double-digits goals in just the ninth match of the year. His goal came after Western's goalie was unable to clear the ball, and Madsen scooped up the ball and punched it in from six yards.

In overtime, both sides were unable to find the golden goal, with the Saints taking four shots, one on target, and three for Western, two on target.

"I admire Western's approach and resiliency to tie the game and I think that is a real trait in our conference as teams compete so well in situations like this," said head coach Rob Walker. "I'm proud of the work the guys did today. We will know more about some of the questions we have for the game when we review the video tomorrow. But just as we review this game, we've got to get ready for our next test on Thursday against a solid Montana State Billings team."

Saint Martin's goes to 5-2-2 overall on the year, and 0-1-1 in GNAC play. The Saints return home to host Montana State Billings on Thursday, October 10 at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
