Westminster Hits Last Second Basket To Dash Saints' Comeback

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Saints trailed by as many as 12 but were able to tie the game heading into the final possession. After a steal and pair of free throws of Schumacher knotted the score at 77-77, it was a last second 3-pointer by Westminster's Jai Jai Ely that proved to be difference maker in the 80-77 decision.

Schumacher led the Saints with 22 points, including five 3-pointers and seven rebounds. In just 23 minutes of action for Demonte Malloy, the guard scored 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. The two combined for the final 11 of the Saints' 13 points to fuel the comeback attempt. However, despite the Saints' defensive efforts, Westminster called a timeout with just three seconds left on the clock. Out of the break, Ely was able to find a spot in the zone and connect on a 3-pointer to win the game.

Both sides had any issues finding their offense in the early goings of the game, with the game knotted at 12-12 in just four minutes. Westminster found the first run of the game, going on a 14-2 run to open up a 26-14 lead with 10:28 left to go in the half.

In a matter of minutes the Saints had responded with a run of their own. In just five minutes, the Saints went from trailing by 12 to leading by four. Four 3-pointers, and a couple layups by Malloy helped give the Saints the edge. However; the lead did not hold for long, as Westminster regrouped and regained the lead, 42-33 by halftime.

Saint Martin's made adjustments at halftime and came out of the break by scoring 10 unanswered points and retaking the lead. The momentum once again swung back to Westminster, as the Griffins once again found themselves up by 10 at the 11:48 mark.

Down the stretch, the Saints slowly chipped away at the lead, closing the game on a Malloy layup at 65-65. Saint Martin's and Westminster proceeded to trade baskets in the final minutes, but it was the Griffins getting the final opportunity in the closing seconds.

CJ Jennings saw 37 minutes of action, scoring 14 points with two rebounds, and two assists. John Moore and Cole Alton combined for 13 points and 11 rebounds. Logan Rooney was only the seventh Saint to score, adding two off of the bench.

Saint Martin's shot 26-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor, 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) from beyond the arc, and 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) at the line. The Saints collected 39 rebounds, 15 assists on 21 turnovers, with eight steals, and three blocks as a team.
