ST. GEORGE, Utah – Trailing by double-digits down the stretch to Dixie State, the Saints surged in the final minute, and cut the score to four. However; the lead was enough padding for Dixie State to hold off the comeback and secure the 75-71 victory.
Demonte Malloy put together another all-around game for the Saints, leading in scoring with 26, along with nine boards in 34 minutes.
Marky Adams recorded a double-double at 10 points, 12 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass. Saint Martin's shot the ball well from inside, but struggled to find their shot from outside going 9-for-35.
Dixie State used a 9-2 run in the opening minutes of the first half to jump out to a 22-12 lead. Saint Martin's responded over the next four minutes, trimming the lead down to three on baskets from Malloy,
Cole Alton, and
Alex Schumacher.
Both sides traded baskets throughout the first half, with the Saints managing to get within two with just 2:24 left in the half. Dixie State knocked down a basket and a 3-pointer, before
CJ Jennings ended the half with a layup to bring the score to 40-33 Dixie State on top.
Over the first seven minutes of the second half, Dixie State opened up a 55-40 lead, highlighted by their 9-0 run. The Saints offense went cold during the stretch, and went exactly six minutes without a field goal.
The lead for the Trailblazers around the 10-point mark for most of the second half, despite the Saints' best attempts. However, the momentum began to swing in the last 60 seconds of the game.
After a pair of Dixie State free throws made the score 71-59, Saint Martin's proceeded to rattle off 10 of the next 12 points, and cut the score to 73-69 with 10 seconds left. Saint Martin's, forced to foul, put Dixie State at the line, looking for an opportunity to continue their comeback. Ultimately, Dixie State converted both free throw attempts and iced the game.
Cole Alton came off the bench and provided the Saints with all 14 of their bench points, along with five boards. Jennings ended the game with 12 points, and four rebounds.
The Saints as team shot 26-for-72 (36.1 percent) from the field, 9-for-35 (25.7 percent) beyond the arc, and 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) at the line. SMU grabbed 49 rebounds, collected eight assists on 15 turnovers, along with four blocks and three steals.
Saint Martin's returns home on Tuesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. to host Capilano from Canada. The game will be available on smusaints.com with live stats and video for free.
