BILLINGS, Mont. – The legend of
Brandon Madsen continues to grow in 2019 with each passing match. With the Saints trailing by one in the final minutes of the match, Madsen scored the equalizer to force overtime. Once again, Madsen came through in the clutch with the golden goal in the 99th minute to led Saint Martin's to a 2-1 victory.
Montana State Billings struck first, leading off with a goal in the 26th minute on a cross to the center of the box, which was redirected to the lower left of the net. Saint Martin's connected on three shots in the half, but were unable to equalize before the break.
Saint Martin's continued to apply pressure in the second half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 10-1 but it wasn't until their next to last shot that made an impact. In the 86th minute, goalie
Hunter Askland played a ball all the way upfront to Madsen, who connected just at the top of the box. The ball carried over the hands of the Yellowjackets' keeper, and finding the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
In the overtime period, neither side had much action until the final minutes. After the Yellowjackets' corner, the Saints turned the ball upfield and
Isaac Hernandez found Madsen in the middle of the box. Madsen found a seem and connected for his 15th goal of the year to end the match.
The Saints' defense found its footing after the goal was allowed, only allowing four shots all match, including Askland making a save.
"We are really proud of the way the guys battle today," said head coach
Rob Walker. "We made some adjustments, and how we wanted to set up our team, and it took us a little while to get rolling. The fight in the overtime from the guys showed a lot of character after an overtime match on Thursday."
