ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Coming off their first win of the season, and despite the record-tying performance from
Kylie Alos, Saint Martin's pushed Alaska Anchorage on the road, but ultimately fell in straight sets.
In the opening set, it looked to be Saint Martin's. The Saints captured the lead back at the 10-9 mark, and held strong until the final point. SMU led 24-21; however, the Seawolves rallied with their backs to the wall. Despite 10 points combined from
Mackenzie Carter and
Ililani Kamaka, the Saints were unable to find the final point, and fell 26-24 in the set.
The momentum switched to Alaska Anchorage after the rally, and the Seawolves never looked back. In the second set, Alaska Anchorage jumped out to an early lead, and used an 8-1 run to capitalize on their 25-17 set victory.
Saint Martin's rebounded strong in the third set, continuously finding a way to rally against the Seawolves. SMU connected on 14 kills and three blocks to help tie the score eight different times throughout the set. The Saints held the early lead in the set until a 7-0 run put UAA back on top 20-14. Carter jumpstarted the Saints' offense with three straight kills, and combined with
Emily Gooding's two kills, the Saints tied the set at 24-24. Once again, like the first set, the Seawolves were able to find a way to squeeze past the Saints and escape with the 26-24 victory.
Kylie Alos tied the school record for most digs in a three set match, equaling Brianna Bautista's 29 dig performance against Alaska Fairbanks in 2011. Alos also managed two aces and two assists. Carter finished the match with another double-digit kill effort, leading the way with 16, along with eight digs. Kamaka and Gooding combined for 17 kills, while
Alyssa Bartlett finished at 32 assists, and four kills.
Saint Martin's closes out their 2019 campaign with a match against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
