LACEY, Wash. – Aaron Shoup and
Mickey Walker combined to toss a 2-run, 4-hit gem in the first game of the Saints' doubleheader with Concordia, as the Saints took the first game 4-2 before falling 9-5 in the second tilt.
In the early goings of the season, the pitching for the Saints has been keeping them in ball games and Shoup and Walker continued that trend in the home opener. Shoup went 6.2 innings, giving up one run before Walker closed down the 2.1 inning save, while striking out four.
Kahi Hirano delivered a critical RBI double in the sixth that scored two runs and gave SMU the lead. In the second game, Concordia's bats came alive in the middle of the game, and despite the Saints scoring three runs in the seventh, were unable to close the 9-5 gap.
Ryne Oshiro got the Saints on the board first in the third inning, ripping a double to left field and scoring
Elijiah Santiago. Concordia was unable to get anything going offensively until the sixth inning, when a sac fly drove in the tying the run.
The next half inning, the Saints reclaimed their lead after Hirano doubled, scoring both
Benjamin Wadowski and
Colton Peha. The Saints then added an insurance run in seven on a sac fly from
Austin Feist, bringing home Oshiro. Concordia chipped away with a run in the eighth but the Saints were able to lock up the 4-2 win.
In the second game, the Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring one on a throwing error by CU, followed by an RBI single from Aaron Renuad. However, Concordia scored nine straight runs over the course of the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning. The offensive surge lifted to force a split on the day. Saint Martin's did manage to score three in the seventh, a bases-loaded walk, a sac fly, and a RBI single, but the effort came up short in the 9-5 loss.
Tanner Inouye (1-3) got the start in the second game, going 4.1 innings, but allowing five runs on five hits, with four strike outs.
Robbie Shineman pitched one inning of relief, followed by
Luke Hare and finally
Garrison Ritter closed it out with 1.2 innings of shutout ball.
The Saints and the Cavaliers play the final two games tomorrow, starting at noon. Live stats of the game will be available on smusaints.com.
