Pitching Remains Strong In Doubleheader Split With WOU - After Western Oregon limited the Saints to only three hits in the opening game, Tanner Inouye received six runs of support in the Saints' doubleheader split 6-2.
 
The offense never found their hits in the first game to back up Aaron Shoup. The lefty tossed six innings, giving up two runs on only two hits. However, the bats came alive in the second game, highlighted by a four run second inning. Inouye got all the support he needed as the junior pitched six plus innings, giving up two runs and punching out four.
 
Streby Dominates Western Oregon In Series Split - Clark Streby put together one of the best performances in his one and half seasons at Saint Martin's on Sunday afternoon. The senior righty went eight innings, allowing only four hits, no runs and struck out three as the Saints split the series with Western Oregon.
 
Streby was provided with 10 runs of support, the second most on the year by the Saints in a single game. Austin Feist supplied a two run home run in the fourth as the Saints routed the Wolves in a 10-0 opener to manage a split in the series. With a chance to win the series, Western Oregon bounced back with 10 runs in the opening frames to secure the split with an 11-5 decision.
 
Micah McNicoll Named GNAC Hitter of the Week - Micah McNicoll's bat refused to cool off in the cold Idaho weather, and instead heated up for seven hits, highlighted by a two-run home run, and four RBIs, as he was named the GNAC Hitter of the Week. McNicoll began the weekend with a hit and a walk in the opening game of the five game series with College of Idaho. In the second game, he reached base on a walk and later scored in the inning. After sitting out the third game, he returned to the lineup with force. The junior went 2-for-4, both hits doubles, with two runs scored to help the Saints to a 3-2 victory. In the series finale, McNicoll put it all together, going 4-for-5, capped-off by his two-run home run in the second inning. He finished the game with four RBIs and two more runs scored.
 
Tanner Inouye Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week - Tanner Inouye started the 2019 season off with a bang, throwing 5.2 innings, picking up the win, and also his first GNAC Pitcher of the Week award this season. Inouye went 5.2 innings against Dixie State on Sunday, earning the first win of the year for the Saints. During the start, Inouye did allow three runs on the board; however, all the runs were unearned. He punched out three Trailblazers and left five runners on base, including working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning. The award marks the first of the season for Inouye and his second in his career.
 
Three Strikes You're Out – The Saints' pitching staff has turned into one of the best strike out rotations in the GNAC. In 231 innings pitched, Saint Martin's has punched out 233 batters, led by Aaron Shoup (41) and Tanner Inouye (47). Clark Streby and Mickey Walker has also added to the impressive mark, striking out 61 combined.
 
Shoup Back To Ace Form – The senior Aaron Shoup has resumed his role as the ace of the staff. Shoup is currently the GNAC leader in innings pitched (44.1), second in ERA (2.85), third in opposing batting average (.203) and fifth in strikeouts (41).
 
Lights Out Pitching – On the season, the Saints' feature the best pitching in all of the GNAC. Entering the week, SMU is currently first in ERA (4.21), second in opposing batting average (.254), second in strikeouts (233), and second in innings pitched (233.0).
 
Innings EatersAaron Shoup and Clark Streby know how to go deep into games, a rare trait in baseball nowadays. The seniors have combined to throw over 80 innings this season, and are first and second in innings pitched in the GNAC.
 
Lefty on Lefty Matchup – The left handed bat Aaron Renaud loves to see southpaws on the mound. The freshman is hitting .357 off them this season, which ranks seventh best in GNAC. Even more impressive is Renaud is top hitting left handed bat against lefty in the conference.
 
Saints Take The Series – Playing at home against Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin's managed a split on the opening doubleheader before sweeping the final day of action. The series win marked the first GNAC series win for SMU since Northwest Nazarene back in April, 2017.
 
Saints Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll - Led by All-Conference outfielder Austin Feist and shortstop Ryne Oshiro, along with a veteran pitching staff, the Saints' baseball team was selected sixth in the GNAC Preseason Poll on Wednesday. The Saints enter the season after an 11-37 campaign last year; however, despite the record, proved to show many bright spots for the future.
 
Season Preview - Feist, named to the first team All-Conference, sits in the middle of the lineup with a .320 batting average, .390 on-base percentage, and .511 slugging percentage. The senior led the team last year in home runs (6), RBI (30), total bases (91), and OPS (.901).
 
Looking to back up his stellar freshman season, Oshiro provides pop up the middle of the infield with his team leading .328 batting average. Along with the batting average, Oshiro collected 57 hits, tied for the team lead, three home runs, and 19 RBIs. The freshman was selected as a second team All-Conference shortstop.
 
Some other notable returners in the offense include outfielder Colton Peha and infielder Micah NcNicoll. Peha hit for a .258 average, and McNicoll finished with a .234 mark, while both hit two home runs and 16 RBIs.
 
On the pitching side, the Saints return nine pitchers, including six seniors. Mickey Walker, Ryan Dorney, Luke Hare, Clark Streby, Robbie Shineman, and Aaron Shoup add veteran leadership to the staff. Streby led the team in wins (4), strikeouts (50), innings pitched (56.2) and games started (11). The Saints will also look to junior Tanner Inouye after his All-Conference season. In nine starts, Inouye accomplished three quality starts, including a complete game, one run, seven strikeout gem against Northwest Nazarene.
