Saints Tie Home Run Record In Doubleheader Split - With the regular season down to its final games, Saint Martin's traveled to Northwest Nazarene for a critical four-game series. The Nighthawks quickly made work of the Saints in the opening game, 7-0, but the Saints bounced back with a record setting performance in their 11-1 win to salvage a split.
Clubbing five home runs, which tied the single game school record, the Saints provided plenty of run support for
Tanner Inouye. Inouye went five strong innings, and did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning.
Dakota Hill supplied two home runs in the game, becoming only the 11th Saint in program history with two or more home runs in a game.
Micah McNicoll,
Ryne Oshiro and
Aaron Renaud all jumped in the action with home runs of their own.
Saints Remain in Playoff Hunt with Saturday Split - Following a Friday split, Saint Martin's and Northwest Nazarene ended their regular-season series Saturday night. Strong pitching and defense made up the difference as the Saints grabbed the game three victory, 5-1. Game four however, the Nighthawks jumped ahead and the late game heroics fell just short for SMU as Northwest Nazarene snuck out with the 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
Behind 13 hits and a dominant 6.1 innings pitched by
Clark Streby in game one, the Saints grabbed the lead early in the second inning and never looked back.
Saints Drop Finale Against Central Washington – After playing the first three innings back on April 14, the game between Saint Martin's and Central Washington was called due to lack of light. The two teams resumed and completed the game on Monday, with the Wildcats taking the decision 4-0.
Two errors by the Saints that resulted in runs on the board for Central Washington, along with scattered hits throughout the game by the Saints' offense, played a key factor in the game.
Micah McNicoll finished with two hits, while
Ryne Oshiro,
Aaron Renaud, and
Cody Chavis each added a hit of their own.
Luke Hare and
Robbie Shineman combined to only allow one earned run over six innings of relief.
Historic 11 Saints Named To GNAC All-Academic Team - The 2019 season has been seen many records on the field broken, and now a record has been broken in the classroom. The Saints broke the program record for most selections in a single season to the GNAC All-Academic team with 11.
Mickey Walker Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week - Walker first appeared on Friday, going four innings, and punching out nine Cavaliers, while allowing only two hits to help keep the Saints tied with Concordia. Then the following day, Walker was called in to retire the final four outs of the game. He allowed one hit but no runs, and struck out two more to earn his sixth save of the season, which is tied for the lead in the GNAC.
Ryan Dorney Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week - Dorney got the start in game four against Montana State Billings, who had put double-digits runs in two of the previous three games. Dorney quickly made work of the Yellowjackets, punching out six, while only allowing two hits and zero runs in five innings of work. Dorney was credited with his second win of the season.
Micah McNicoll Named GNAC Hitter of the Week - McNicoll began the weekend with a hit and a walk in the opening game of the five game series with College of Idaho. In the second game, he reached base on a walk and later scored in the inning. After sitting out the third game, he returned to the lineup with force. The junior went 2-for-4, both hits doubles, with two runs scored to help the Saints to a 3-2 victory. In the series finale, McNicoll put it all together, going 4-for-5, capped-off by his two-run home run in the second inning. He finished the game with four RBIs and two more runs scored.
Tanner Inouye Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week Twice -
Tanner Inouye started the 2019 season off with a bang, throwing 5.2 innings, picking up the win, and also his first GNAC Pitcher of the Week award this season. Inouye went 5.2 innings against Dixie State on Sunday, earning the first win of the year for the Saints. During the start, Inouye did allow three runs on the board; however, all the runs were unearned. He punched out three Trailblazers and left five runners on base, including working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning.
Tanner Inouye etched his name in the Saint Martin's record book after striking out 11 Wildcats on Friday, setting the single season strike out record. Inouye began the day with 55 strikeouts on the year, six behind the school record set back in 2003. It only took Inouye until the fourth inning to rack up the record-tying strikeout, and in the fifth, the junior penciled his name at the top of the leader board. On the day, Inouye went six of the seven innings, earning his third win of the season after allowing two runs on four hits. The Saints went on to win the game 5-2 to complete the doubleheader sweep of Central Washington.
Three Strikes You're Out – The Saints' pitching staff has turned into one of the best strike out rotations in the GNAC. In 359 innings pitched, Saint Martin's has punched out 367 batters, led by the GNAC leader
Tanner Inouye (75), and
Aaron Shoup (61).
Clark Streby,
Mickey Walker, and
Ryan Dorney have also added to the impressive mark, striking out 140 combined.
It's An Arms Race –
Mickey Walker and
Aaron Shoup will come down to the final inning on deciding who will be the Saints' All-time strikeout king. Walker currently leads with 190 career punchouts while Shoup sits close behind at 180.
Lights Out Pitching – On the season, the Saints' feature the best pitching in all of the GNAC. Entering the week, SMU is currently second in ERA (4.69), second in opposing batting average (.258), first in strikeouts (333), and second in innings pitched (322.1). This year's Saints are the first in program history to record 300 strikeouts or more in a single season.
100 RBIs – During the series with Central Washington,
Austin Feist collected his 100th career RBI. Feist became only the fourth player in SMU history with 100 RBIs.
Innings Eaters –
Aaron Shoup,
Tanner Inouye, and
Clark Streby know how to go deep into games, a rare trait in baseball nowadays. The upperclassmen have combined to throw 195 innings this season, and are first, second and third in innings pitched in the GNAC.
Saints Take The Series – Playing at home against Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin's managed a split on the opening doubleheader before sweeping the final day of action. The series win marked the first GNAC series win for SMU since Northwest Nazarene back in April, 2017. Saint Martin's proceeded to sweep the Wildcats of Central Washington in a three-game series at home.
Saints Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll - Led by All-Conference outfielder
Austin Feist and shortstop
Ryne Oshiro, along with a veteran pitching staff, the Saints' baseball team was selected sixth in the GNAC Preseason Poll on Wednesday. The Saints enter the season after an 11-37 campaign last year; however, despite the record, proved to show many bright spots for the future.
Season Preview - Feist, named to the first team All-Conference, sits in the middle of the lineup with a .320 batting average, .390 on-base percentage, and .511 slugging percentage. The senior led the team last year in home runs (6), RBI (30), total bases (91), and OPS (.901).
Looking to back up his stellar freshman season, Oshiro provides pop up the middle of the infield with his team leading .328 batting average. Along with the batting average, Oshiro collected 57 hits, tied for the team lead, three home runs, and 19 RBIs. The freshman was selected as a second team All-Conference shortstop.
Some other notable returners in the offense include outfielder
Colton Peha and infielder Micah NcNicoll. Peha hit for a .258 average, and McNicoll finished with a .234 mark, while both hit two home runs and 16 RBIs.
On the pitching side, the Saints return nine pitchers, including six seniors.
Mickey Walker,
Ryan Dorney,
Luke Hare,
Clark Streby,
Robbie Shineman, and
Aaron Shoup add veteran leadership to the staff. Streby led the team in wins (4), strikeouts (50), innings pitched (56.2) and games started (11). The Saints will also look to junior
Tanner Inouye after his All-Conference season. In nine starts, Inouye accomplished three quality starts, including a complete game, one run, seven strikeout gem against Northwest Nazarene.
