Madsen Strikes Twice In Saints Win Over Art U

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The GNAC's leading goal scorer Brandon Madsen, did not wait long to make his mark against Academy of Art. The senior punched home his fourth and fifth goals of the season to lift Saint Martin's to a 2-0 victory over Academy of Art.

In the 29th minute, Oscar Aguilar's corner found Jose Marquez, who headed it to Madsen who's header found the back of the net. The Saints (3-1-1) outshot Art U (0-4-0) seven to four in the first half, limiting the Urban Knights' chances, and kept them scoreless into halftime.

In the second half, more solid defense by the Saints led to SMU delivering the final blow in the 75th minute. Once again it was Madsen, who scored his fifth goal and 34th of his career, and was assisted by Cole Mattson and Stephen Murray. The second goal proved to be enough as Saint Martin's defense held Academy of Art scoreless.

"First of all, it was really fun to play a game virtually in the shadow of the Golden Gate bridge," said head coach Rob Walker. "I think if we could as for one wish for the game, we would've liked to have maintained our quality more from our warm up into the start of the first half when Art U posed some problems. However, we thought our second half was a little stronger, and definitely getting a two goal cushion was a good way to get through the game."

Dylan Shaw got the start at keeper, posting his first clean sheet of his career, with two saves on seven shots faced.

Saint Martin's travels to Stanislaus State on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. match. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
