TURLOCK, Calif. – At the start of 2019, nobody has been able to find the answer to the question, how does one stop
Brandon Madsen from scoring? The senior continued his domination of defenses, scoring two more goals against Stanislaus State in the Saints' 4-1 road victory.
After punching home two goals against Academy of Art on Thursday, Madsen scored goal number six and seven on the year, paving the way to the victory. His first goal came just 3:11 minutes into the match on a cross from
Jason Fairhurst, finishing with a header to the far post.
Stanislaus State capitalized on a penalty kick in the 37th minute to equalize the match and send it to halftime with a 1-1 score.
Oscar Aguilar broke the tie just three minutes into the second half, scoring his first goal of his career. Madsen added to the lead in the 53rd minute on another assist from Fairhurst, with another header.
Jose Marquez iced the match in the 65th minute on a ball from
Stephen Murray with his own header to the far post.
Saint Martin's recorded 10 shots, with seven coming on target, and four resulting in goals.
Dylan Shaw played the first 72 minutes at keeper for the Saints, allowing the one goal before
Gunnar Morehead closed out the final 19 minutes with two saves.
"We had some great opportunities to score in the first period, but that's the nature of soccer not converting those chances to goals. Nonetheless, the second half was comprehensive. The guys really did a good job of dealing with Stanislaus's attack, and we put together some really good ball movement. It's great to come to California and pick up a couple wins, but really our trip doesn't end until we play a very talented Lubbock Christian team."
Saint Martin's does not have long to enjoy the wins, traveling back home for a rare Sunday match, hosting Lubbock Christian. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
