Saints Close Out Successful Week With 3-2 Victory Over Lubbock Christian

LACEY, Wash. – Brandon Madsen notched two goals in both the Saints' matches in California, and decided to keep that trend going at home on Sunday. Scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the year, Madsen and Saints topped Lubbock Christian 3-2 at home.

Last week, Madsen became the all-time leading scorer in Saint Martin's history. He followed that up with possibly the greatest week long performance in school history, scoring six goals in three matches. Jason Fairhurst sealed the match with his second goal of the year, while Oscar Aguilar assisted on two goals as Saint Martin's improved to 5-1-1 on the year.

Madsen's first goal came in the 36th minute on a cross the middle of the box, where he headed the ball to the near post. The Saints posted a clean half, and holding Lubbock Christian scoreless into halftime.

The Chaps got on the board, scoring the equalizer in the 51st minute on a shot from the top of the box to the far post. However, the tie only stood for a little over five minutes when Madsen broke away from his defenders and scored on a ball from 10 yards out. Saint Martin's iced the match in the 72nd minute when Fairhurst scored off of Aguilar's corner kick.

Lubbock Christian added drama to the match, scoring in the 86th minute, and taking multiple shots looking to force overtime. In the end, it was the Saints' defense that stood tall and clinched the victory.

"It has been a great three games since Thursday," said head coach Rob Walker. "To come off of a road trip in California and come home and play a quality opponent like Lubbock Christian, really is a testament to our guys desire to put themselves forward in the game. From the guys that made the trip and the guys that stayed home; this is a real team effort with tons of support. I'm really proud of the boys, and we've had a very short compact and successful non-conference. We have some really tough challenges right around the corner, but it will be good to get a break and get some quality training in before conference action."

Saint Martin's takes next week off before GNAC action on the road against defending champion Simon Fraser on October 3. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
