Saints Dismantle Adams State For First Victory In 2019

LACEY, Wash. – The Saints played a complete game against Adams State, scoring five goals, shutting out the Grizzlies, and outshooting them to a tune of 25 to 7.

Four different Saints scored in the match, including first career goals by Cole Mattson and Erik De Anda. Brandon Madsen made history by tying the Saints' all-time goals scored record with his 30th career goal. Jason Fairhurst scored his first goal of the season, while an own goal by Adams State. The Saints recorded their first clean sheet of the season from a combined effort from goalkeepers Gunnar Morehead and Hunter Askland.

Saint Martin's didn't wait long to light up the scoreboard, scoring in the 12th minute when Fairhurst punched in a ball from Nick Phillips and Sebastian Navarro. Just six minutes later, Mattson added to the lead with a sliding shot to the left post on a pass from Navarro and Madsen.

In the second half, the Saints put the game out of reach, scoring in the 72nd, 74th, and 79th minutes. A bicycle kick from Stephen Murray bounced off of an Adams State player for an own goal to make it 3-0. Madsen lined up and scored the fourth goal of the match on a PK before De Anda sealed the deal with a goal from the top of the box.

"As we put our season together, the two RMAC schools have really pushed our collective envelope," said head coach Rob Walker. "We had big goals today, which is really the coolest part of our story. Brandon Madsen tying the all-time goals mark here at Saint Martin's, Cole Mattson getting on the scoreboard after being out last year with an injury, and we are doubly proud of Erik De Anda for getting his first collegiate goal after being on the training room shelf for two years here as a Saint."

From start to finish, the Saints dominated the match in all aspects, by controlling possession, to controlling the shots, to posting a shutout with two saves on seven shots.

Saint Martin's improved to 1-0-1 and continues their home stand against Pacific on September 12 at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
