PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite standout performances from
Demonte Malloy and
Marky Adams, who combined for 47 points, and 20 rebounds, the Saints fell on the road to Concordia 86-to-74 on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Martin's (4-11, 2-4 GNAC) held a lead throughout most the of the game, until around the 12-minute mark of the second half. Concordia (2-12, 1-5 GNAC) locked down the Saints' offense, and used a 25-to-3 run to overpower the Saints down the stretch. Outside of Malloy, and Adams, the Saints only combined for 27 points on 10-for-32 shooting.
Throughout a majority of the first half, both sides traded baskets and the lead back-and-forth. The scoreboard was tied five different times before the Saints went on a mini run. Saint Martin's rattled off eight of ten points to open up a 30-24 lead with five minutes left to go.
Concordia managed to connect on multiple 3-pointers to pull back to within even, but a
Logan Rooney 3-pointer gave the Saints a 37-34 lead at halftime.
The Cavaliers took their first lead, 42-41, of the second half with 16:40 left to go on a 3-pointer. Saint Martin's responded right back and surged back to a 52-47 lead with 12:57 left in the game.
Then the momentum swung to Concordia. The Cavaliers shut down the Saints' offense over the next seven minutes, limiting SMU to only three points. Meanwhile, Concordia caught fire on the offensive end, outpacing SMU 25-3 during that time.
Saint Martin's was unable to find the baskets needed to form a comeback and ultimately fell, extending their losing streak to seven games.
Alex Schumacher played a full 40 minutes, ending the night with six points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
CJ Jennings added nine points, while
Caden Smith,
John Moore, and Rooney added 12 points, all from deep.
Saint Martin's as a team shot 31-for-65 (47.7 percent) from the floor, 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) beyond the arc, and 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) at the line. SMU grabbed 45 rebounds, 18 assists on 18 turnovers, along with four blocks and two steals.
