Saints Can’t Find Rhythm In Loss To Falcons

LACEY, Wash. – A slow offensive start proved to be fatal for Saint Martin's, as they fell 87-63 to Seattle Pacific Tuesday night.

Seattle Pacific (11-4, 7-0 GNAC) held the momentum to start out the game, holding a lead throughout. Saint Martin's (4-11, 2-5 GNAC) went cold offensively and were unable to cut the deficit heading into halftime, shooting just 30.8 percent from the field, compared to SPU's 58.1 from the floor. Using the slow start, the Falcons managed to build up a lead large enough to hold them over the rest of the game.

Seattle Pacific jumped out to an early 12-3 lead just five minutes into the game, after connecting for two 3-pointers. A CJ Jennings three brought it back within single digits; however, SPU quickly put an end to this and proceeded to score the next seven points. Both teams continued to go basket-for-basket throughout the rest of the half, until an 8-1 run extended the Falcon's lead. Seattle Pacific capitalized on turnovers and cold shooting from the Saints to end the half 46-24.

Seattle Pacific kept its foot on the gas out of the break, starting the half with a 3-pointer. The Saints answered back with a basket of their own, and both teams proceeded to trade baskets. The Falcons stretched the lead to as many as 26 at the 13-minute mark. Saint Martin's answered with a 10-2 run, coming from Alex Schumacher and Demonte Malloy, chipping away at the lead for a comeback attempt.

The Falcon's first half offensive surge proved to be too far of a gap to close for the Saints, as they dropped the game 87-63.

Malloy led the way with 19 points, while adding 11 rebounds and four assists for his fourth double-double of the season. John Moore ended with 13 points and six rebounds, while Schumacher recorded 13 points along with three rebounds. Marky Adams led the Saints in rebounds with 11, and added eight points.

Saint Martin's as a team shot 25-for-61 (41 percent) from the floor, 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) beyond the arc, and 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) at the line. SMU grabbed 37 rebounds, seven assists on 21 turnovers, along with two blocks and four steals.

The Saints continue home Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m., following the SMU women's basketball team at 5:15 p.m. SMU squares off against MSU Billings with live stats and video available at smusaints.com
