Saints Light Up Scoreboard In Doubleheader Split - The Saints finished their first game series in a split in Portland, outscoring the Cavaliers for a score of 17-9. Although the Saints lit up the scoreboard in the second game, they could not manage to do so in the first. An early first inning run by the Cavaliers was the deciding factor of the game, while
Tanner Inouye went six innings, allowing only four hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
In the second game, the runs wouldn't stop coming for the Saints. They scored six runs in the second inning, four in the fourth, and seven in the seventh.
Concordia Takes Two Off Saints To Close Out Series - The four-game series ended with two losses, trailing by just one at the end of each game. In the first game, the Saints had multiple opportunities to tie it up after trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning; however, could not make the game-tying run.
In the second game, SMU quickly took the lead in the first; however, Concordia answered right back to take the lead that held for a 5-4 win.
Renaud Back In Full Force – Renaud started off the 2020 season with a bang, beginning the first weekend on Friday with two hits off of four at-bats in the first of the four game series against Holy Names. In the second game, he scored one run and finished with one RBI while reaching base two times on walks. He helped lead the Saints to victory in the third and fourth games, scoring one of the Saints runs, two hits, and reached base twice on walks. In the series against Academy of Art, Renaud added six hits and three RBIs, holding his batting average at .462. Renaud batted .485 (7-for-13) with four runs and four walks total in the Concordia series.
Renaud continues his standings on the GNAC leaderboard, ranking second in batting average (.487), second in on-base percentage (.592), and third in hits (19).
Oshiro Gets Off To Fast Start – Junior shortstop leads the team in RBIs with 11, ranking third on the GNAC leaderboard. In the Holy Names series, he batted .333 (5-for-15), with four RBIs, and two runs. Against Academy of Art, he led with five RBIs three runs, and two doubles, and one home run. He added two RBIs, two runs against Concordia. Oshiro came off a successful sophomore campaign, ranking second on the team in batting average with .283, and scored 52 runs, 10 doubles, three home runs, and drove in 22 RBI's.
Fresh On Scene – New to the team,
Finnley Butler,
Jacob Woodall, and
Drew Rose have proven to make their mark early in the season with a combined 18.1 innings while accumulating 33 total strikeouts.
Finnley Butler who comes from Boise, Idaho, has pitched 8.1 shutout innings for the Saints in the first three series, allowing only nine hits while totaling four strikeouts. Rose, a freshman from South Bend, Washington, has pitched nine innings, combining for 13 total strikeouts in just three different appearances.
Jacob Woodall, a freshman from Anchorage, Alaska, made his mark against Holy Names with three shutout innings, allowing only two hits to help lead the Saints to victory. He has pitched a total of five innings, with four strikeouts, and one save.
Stand Em' Up Sit Em' Down – Senior pitchers
Tanner Inouye and
Harrison Goebel have been neck and neck this season in strikeouts, combining for 36 in six total game starts. Inouye currently leads between the two with 19, averaging 11.4 strikeouts a game, ranking fourth in the GNAC. Senior transfer
Harrison Goebel started the first series strong, and punched out seven batters in 5.1 strong innings, while allowing only one run on three hits in the third game of the Holy Names series. He now totals 17 strikeouts, ranking eighth in the GNAC in strikeouts per game with 9.56.
Saints' Baseball Voted Fourth In GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll - A season removed from reaching the program's first GNAC Championship game, the Saints were ranked fourth in the GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll on Friday. Defending GNAC Champions, Montana State Billings, earned the first place ranking with four first place votes and 33 points total. Western Oregon, who nabbed one first place vote, followed closely behind with 31 points. Northwest Nazarene earned third overall with 22 points. Central Washington and Saint Martin's tied for fourth overall with 15 points, and Concordia rounded out the group with 10 points.
Season Preview – Saint Martin's returns a core of key players from last year's squad, headlined by All-Region pitcher
Tanner Inouye. Inouye went 4-6 with a 4.58 ERA while striking out 87 in 72.2 innings of work. Inouye threw two completed games in 13 starts.
On the offensive side, All-Conference first baseman
Aaron Renaud leads the lineup with a .319 batting average, one home run, and 26 RBIs. Joining him in the infield is All-Conference shortstop
Ryne Oshiro, and All-Conference third baseman
Micah McNicoll. Oshiro is coming off a .283 season with three home runs and 22 RBIs. McNicoll developed into a .282 hitter with two home runs, and 16 RBIs.
Saint Martin's will also bring back their backstop from last season,
Bryant Nakagawa. The junior catcher posted a .227 batting average, with three extra base hits, and 17 hits.
Other notable returners from last season include infielder
Isaac Hegamin and
Dakota Hill, along with outfielders
Cody Chavis,
Elijiah Santiago, and
Hunter Holmason.
On the rubber, Saint Martin's will have familiar arms in
Benjamin Wadowski, and
Zach Alcos to add to Inouye.
The Saints bring in many new faces for the 2020 season including six position players, and 14 pitchers.
