Saints Clip Nighthawks With Golden Goal From Fairhurst In Overtime

NAMPA, Idaho – There was no shortage of action and drama in the Saints' 5-4 overtime victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon, ending with a golden goal from Jason Fairhurst.

Saint Martin's (2-10-0, 1-4-0 GNAC) looked to have sealed up the road victory in the final minutes of regular time when Diego Andrade connected on the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute. But the Nighthawks (6-5-0, 3-2-0) found a way to tie the match with just 18 seconds left on the scoreboard to force overtime.

After a quiet first overtime period, Fairhurst scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, and second game-winner of 2021. The senior's goal in the 106th minute snapped the Saints' eight game losing skid, and captured the Saints' first win in GNAC action this season.

Cole Mattson got the scoring started for the Saints, getting SMU on board in the third minute. Caden Martin tied up the match right before halftime with his goal, assisted by Fairhurst in the 45th minute. Brian Licona scored his first goal of the year in the 71st minute to tie the match once again for the Saints.

Saint Martin's collected 16 shots, seven on target with three corner kicks. Andrade and Fairhust led the team with three shots, followed by Jay Mendoza, Mattson, and Martin at two each.

Hunter Askland got the start in goal for the Saints, going the full 107, while collecting five saves on 24 shots faced.

Saint Martin's travels to Western Washington on Thursday, October 28 for a 7:00 PM start time. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
