Saints Find Offense Too Late in Loss to Vikings

Bellingham, Wash. – The Saints offense struggled to find their footing in their 3-1 loss to the Vikings.

Saint Martin's (2-11-0, 1-5-0 GNAC) and the Vikings (6-7-0, 4-2-0 GNAC) spent the majority of the first half in a tightly-contested match. Brian Licona had an opportunity early in the half with a shot on goal that was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. Neither team had the advantage until Western Washington broke the stalemate with a goal in the closing minutes of the first half to give them a 1-0 lead going into the break.

The Vikings rode their first half momentum and came out of the break swinging with two unanswered goals in the 58th and 76th minutes of play. Jason Fairhurst capitalized on a defensive miscue to score the first goal for SMU in the 88th minute of the match but the Saints ran out of time to close the deficit any further.

Saint Martin's had 11 total shots from Diego Andrade, Ethan Jud, Jose Marquez, Stephen Murray, Brian Licona with three shots each from Arjun Gill and Fairhurst. Hunter Askland had seven saves in the match.

Saint Martin's is crossing the Canadian border for their next match against Simon Fraser on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 PM. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
