Wild Finish As Saints Fall To Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Saint Martin's and Western Oregon looked poised to be heading to extra time after both were scoreless thru 87 minutes. Then the offense came alive. Western Oregon punched in two goals in 26 seconds, followed by Maddie Wolff adding one in the 89th minute as Saint Martin's fell 2-1.

Western Oregon (4-6-2, 3-3-2 GNAC) recorded 20 shots to the Saints (3-9-0, 2-6-0) 10, but only seven landed on target. And the final three shots on goal resulted in goals. Western Oregon's Lilly Nowatzke found Jenna Efraimson for her first goal of the year to take a 1-0 lead. Then just 26 seconds later, Alyssa Talkington of WOU punched home another goal in what proved to be a critical insurance goal.

After the second goal, Saint Martin's took the kick-off and worked down the field. The Saints were able to force a corner to set up a play. Taylor Goodpaster's corner found Wolff in the box, who headed home her team-leading third goal of the season.

Unfortuantely for the Saints, there was not enough time left on the clock to deliver the game-tying goal, as Western Oregon held on for the 2-1 victory.

Wolff collected three of the Saints' 10 shots, followed by Justine Pauly at two, and five different Saints with one. Soph Mendoza got the start in goal for the Saints, going the full 90 and making three saves on 20 shots faced.

The Saints return home to host Central Washington on Thursday, October 21 at 2:00 PM. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
