LACEY, Wash. -Saint Martin's dropped a nail biter against Central Washington in the last home game of the season inside Marcus Pavilion on Saturday night.
Saint Martin's (2-9) tied up the score with Central Washington (1-3) with two minutes remaining, but the Wildcats made a layup followed by a pair of free throws to hold on for a 64-62 win to make it a split series.
Alex Schumacher led the way for the Saints, scoring 22 points to lead all players, followed by Ty Valesquez with 15.Â
Points were hard to come by in the opening minutes, with neither team scoring until after two minutes into the game. SMU grabbed the first lead of the game and went on a 9-2 run to push themselves ahead. Central responded and ate away at the seven-point lead, and tied it up midway through the first half. Neither team could gain control throughout the rest of the half, with ties at 20-20, 23-23, and 25-25 to end the half.Â
After CWU drowned a three to open up the second half, Schumacher answered with back-to-back layups. SMU stretched their lead to as many as eight and held the momentum until halfway through the half. The Wildcats went on a 13-0 run, holding the Saints scoreless for three minutes.
Seth Coddington and
Demonte Malloy each made a layup to make it a one-point game. Down the stretch after going basket-for-basket, Tyler Valesquez tied up the game with a three-pointer with just two minutes left in the game. Central Washington responded with a layup and a pair of free throws to take the lead. Schumacher again answered back with a layup to make it a two-point game. However, the Saints could not find another basket to tie up the game and CWU took the victory.Â
Saint Martin's as a team shot 25-for-51 (49 percent) from the field, 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) beyond the arc, and 16-for-20 (80 percent) at the line. The Saints out rebounded the Falcons 29-to-32, while collecting 15 assists on 14 turnovers, and grabbed two steals.
