Nighthawks Stifle Saints' Bats In Series Opener - The arms of nationally ranked Northwest Nazarene proved to be too much in the opening doubleheader for the Saints as SMU fell 6-to-2, and 3-0 on Friday.
Reid Little supplied the lone run support for the Saints (4-8, 1-5 GNAC) on the day with his two RBI double down the left field line in the fifth inning of game one. No. 15 Northwest Nazarene (15-3, 9-1 GNAC) scored all six of their runs in the opener in the first three innings but were quiet after the third.
Saints' BB Falls to Northwest Nazarene At Home – Saint Martin's offense struggled to provide run support against the GNAC leader Northwest Nazarene as the Nighthawks took both ends of the doubleheader, 8-4 and 8-1 on Saturday.
Northwest Nazarene (17-3, 11-1 GNAC) jumped out early in both games, fending off a late comeback attempt by the Saints (4-10, 1-7 GNAC) in the early game. The Saints managed to load the bases in the ninth inning, and bring the tying the run to the plate, but were unable to deliver the clutch hits to tie the ballgame. The Nighthawks' pitching in the final game proved to be the difference maker, limiting the opportunities for the Saints to score.
Power At The Plate –
Aaron Renaud was already regarded as one of the top hitters in the GNAC entering 2021, but the sophomore has taken another leap forward. Entering the week, the lefty is third in the GNAC in slugging (.756) and boast a GNAC third best 1.236 OPS.
Ace On The Mound – GNAC All-Conference and D2CCA All-Region selection in 2019,
Tanner Inouye, returns to led the Saints' pitching staff. This year, Inouye ranks 5th in ERA at 4.72 and strikeouts at 18.
Breakout Freshman – It didn't take
Reid Little long to find himself in the middle of the Saints' lineup making an impact. Little is currently second on the team in batting average, second in home runs, and leads in RBIs. His 1.140 OPS is only second to
Aaron Renaud.
Anchors In The Infield – The Saints will enter 2021 led by their All-Conference first baseman
Aaron Renaud and shortstop
Ryne Oshiro. Renaud ranked third in the GNAC last year in batting average at .392 while Oshiro was second in RBIs at 16.
Breaking Records –
Tanner Inouye's 87 strike outs in 2019 stands the single season record in program history. Entering the year, Inouye is only 12 strikeouts (184) away from breaking the school record for most career strikeouts. The record is currently held by
Mickey Walker (196).
Making History – The Saints' 2019 GNAC Championship run was one for the record books. Earning their first GNAC playoff berth since 2014, the Saints won their first ever game in the playoffs, and reached their first ever GNAC Championship game, where they fell to top seed Montana State Billings.
