Saints Honor Six Seniors On Senior Day

LACEY, Wash. – The Saints celebrated six seniors in their last home series, falling to Western Oregon 6-2 and 15-6 on day two.

In the opening game, the Wolves were the first to get on the board, racking up three runs in the third inning. They added another two in the third, but the Saints rallied back with two runs off hits from Aaron Renaud and Mark Steward. But, it was Western Oregon who capped off the game with a late run in the ninth to end to game 6-2.

Cole Hatton had got the start, going six innings and giving up five runs on seven hits, and recording one strikeout. Zach Alcos came in for relief for the final three innings, giving up one run on four hits.

In the finale of the series, senior Tanner Inouye started the Saints off on the mound for the last time on Saints Field. Inouye started off a little slow allowing one earned run in the first inning, but then followed with four shutout innings.

The Saints' offense got rolling in the bottom of the fifth. Ryne Oshiro singled to right field to give the Saints their first run, followed with back-to-back hits from Steward and Dakota Hill for two more runs. WOU walked two of the Saints' batters, bringing another runner in off Hunter Holmason's walk, then Bryant Nakagawa hit a perfect single right through the right side of the field for the Saints' sixth run.

However, Western Oregon's bats got hot in the sixth and the seventh, scoring 14 total runs to ultimately give them the victory.

Inouye went 5.1 innings, followed by Scott Gunther for one inning, then Derek Alumbaugh for the end of the seventh.

The Saints celebrated six seniors before the first game of the doubleheader: Alumbaugh, Inouye, S. Gunther, J. Gunther, Holmason, and Jake Leonard.

SMU heads to Ellensburg, Washington next week for their last series of the season. They face Central Washington with their first doubleheader on May 13, first pitch at 12:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at smusaints.com.
