BURNABY, British Columbia – An early lead from Simon Fraser proved to be too much for the Saints to overcome as Saint Martin's fell 2-1 on Saturday.
Simon Fraser (1-4-1, 1-1-0) notched a goal in the first 33 seconds of the match to establish an early lead. Saint Martin's (2-4-0, 1-1-0) started to settle in midway through the first half, but another SFU goal in the 41st minute put Simon Fraser up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Saints recorded zero shots in the first half to Simon Fraser's nine, began to swing the momentum in the second half. Saint Martin's outshot their opponent 6-to-2, and eventually got on the board in the 89th minute. A red card issued gave
Kiersten Madsen an opportunity for another PK goal, and the senior struck for her second goal of the season. However, Saint Martin's comeback attempt ran out of time, and the Saints dropped to .500 in GNAC play.
"We had a great response in the second half and created several opportunities that we need to start putting away," said head coach
Heather Cato. "We are competing hard, but we have to come out and play both times of the game. Time to take the lessons we learned from the first weekend and move forward this week and training."
Maddie Wolff, and Madsen recorded the two shots on goal, with
Payton Aselton,
Elisabeth Cole, and
Rebecca Garrison each adding one shot.
Soph Mendoza got the start in goal, making five saves on 11 shots.
Saint Martin's returns home to host Montana State Billings, and Seattle Pacific next week. Live stats and video of the matches will be available on smusaints.com.
