ST. LOUIS – In the opening match of 2021, the Saints put the pressure on Missouri S&T for 85 minutes before a last-minute Miners' goal proved to be fatal in a 1-0 loss.
The Saints (0-1-0) were total control of the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Miners (1-0-0) 10-to-2 with three coming on net. However, despite the pressure, the Miners backline never broke and was able to get into halftime with a 0-to-0 draw.
In the second half, the momentum was more 50/50 with Missouri S&T taking five shots to the Saints' four.
Ali Campigotto and the Saints' defense, who had stopped all four attempts by the Miners on goal, looked to be holding strong until the final minutes. Off a corner in the 86
th minute, Ally Hasken punched home the game-winning goal to steal away the match from the Siants in the final moments.
"Overall, we played well, and competed hard today," said head coach
Heather Cato. "We did a great job creating opportunities to score and win this game. So, when we don't capitalize on our chances, we leave the door open for our opponent. We have to be brave in our response on Sunday and trust the process."
Kiersten Madsen led the team with four shots, two falling on net.
Payton Aselton had three shots, followed by
Justine Pauly and
Taylor Goodpaster added two each.
Campigotto played all 90 minutes in goal, facing seven shots, recording four saves.
