Schumacher's Shot Sends Saints To Fifth Straight Victory

BILLINGS, Mont. – With the game tied up at 68-68 in the final seconds, Alex Schumacher did what he does best. The guard dribbled through multiple defenders, worked his way to the top of the key, and pulled up for a game-winning shot to extend the Saints' win streak to five straight.

Schumacher led all scorers on the night with 20 points, but none bigger than his final shot of the night. The sophomore guard put it all together for the Saints, recording a team-high six assists, grabbing three boards, allowing only one turnover in 28 minutes of action. Tyke Thompson, and Christian Haffner added 16 and 14 points respectively, with Thompson falling just one rebound short of a double-double at nine.

Saint Martin's (9-3, 2-1) fell behind early the Montana State Billings (6-8, 2-2), trailing by as many as 11 in the first half. SMU closed the half on a 22-9 run to take two-point lead into the locker room. It was another clutch shot from a Schumacher, this time a 3-pointer with time expiring, to put the Saints on top.

In the final 13 minutes of action in the first half, SMU limited the Yellowjackets to only three made field goals.

SMU looked to be in control midway through the second half, holding on to a seven-point lead. MSU Billings made a run, fueled by multiple 3-pointers, to take back a four-point lead with just four minutes left to go.

In the final minutes, Brett Reed came up with a timely block, then finished on the other end to put the Saints within two. After a MSUB turnover, and missed shot, Kyle Greeley tied up the game with just 1:10 left on the clock. Another costly turnover for the Yellowjackets on the following possession set up the game-winning shot for Schumacher. MSUB had a chance to win with a 3-pointer in the corner that missed the mark.

Saint Martin's returns to action on Thursday, January 13 at 7:30 PM at home against Western Washington. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
