Late Goal Helps SMU Past Billings on Senior Day

LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's soccer team (5-8-1, 3-7-1 GNAC) battled the cold, drizzly weather as well as the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets (2-11-4, 2-8-2 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon, but after a late shot from Ellison Kephart found its way to the back of the net, the Saints were able to hold off MSU-B to grind out a 1-0 victory. It was a celebratory end to senior day, which started with the pregame ceremony to honor graduating Saints Stephanie Roestel, Salma Perez, Taylor Goodpaster, Maddie Wolff, and Soph Mendoza.

This was a game dominated by the backlines, limiting both teams' shots on goals to just a total of 10 on the day combined. In the first half, Billings spent a good chunk of time firing shots near Mendoza's goal, but everytime they were up to the task, seeing two saves in the first half, and two in the second to bring themselves to a total of four on the day and 97 on their career.

The offensive spark came at the perfect time. With 20 minutes to go before the final whistle, Mia Fleming dropped a through ball to Ellison Kephart in the corner who launched and arching ball towards the far post that the MSU-Billings keeper couldn't deal with properly, and it ended up in the back of the net. The Saints would keep the pressure on the Yellowjackets in the half to the tune of five more shots on goal, but Kephart's dagger would be the only one to find paydirt.

The Saints play their final home game of the season on Monday, October 24th as they take on Seattle Pacific University (9-5-1, 7-4 GNAC) at 2 PM on Saints Field.
