LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's soccer team (5-8-2, 3-7-2 GNAC) had an 0-26 record against Seattle Pacific University (9-5-2, 7-4-1 GNAC) going into Monday's game against the Falcons, but a grind-it-out 1-1 draw meant that SMU had escaped a matchup with SPU with points for the first time in team history.
After Seattle Pacific controlled the first portion of play, the Saints started to find their way with lightning-fast counters. Eventually,
Rose Ivanis broke free down the left flank and drove into the box. She calmly slipped a ball past the Falcon keeper where
Rachel Kimura was waiting to stab the ball into the back of the net. The 25
th minute goal put the Saints ahead, but SPU came back strongly, firing two shots off the top crossbar to scare SMU, but nothing found the back of the net before half.
Saint Martin's keeper
Ali Campigotto continued a stellar run of play in the second half, bringing her total to seven saves on the day. The Falcons finally breached her in the 60
th when they slotted a ball across the cage that was swished home to back it 1-1. Both sides had chances to win it in the late going as SMU forced a total of five saves out of SPU, including one clearance off the line from a
Sosna Araya shot. Araya and
Maria Pagnotta led the Saints with three shots each on the day. In the end, neither team could find the difference, and it ended 1-1 between the sides.
The Saints will now finish out their season on the road, firstly taking on Simon Fraser (4-6-6, 3-5-4 GNAC) on Thursday, October 27
th at 6 PM.
