Pagnotta’s Pristine Finish, Campigotto’s Clean Sheet Whisk Saints Over WOU

LACEY, WA. – It wasn't easy for the Saint Martin's women's soccer team (4-6-1, 2-5-1 GNAC) but the Saints found a way to grind out an impressive 1-0 victory over the Western Oregon Wolves (4-4-4, 1-4-3 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.

The Wolves came out running as they fired three shots in the opening 20 minutes and were caught offside twice, a call that was made more than a handful of times against WOU throughout the contest. A Salma Perez shot on goal in the 20th flipped the script, however, and Rachel Kimura fired another shot to the frame of the Wolves just 30 seconds later. Those two saves wouldn't be enough as third time was a charm for SMU when Taylor Goodpaster received a great kick from Saint goalie Ali Campigotto who used it to slice through the heart of the Western Oregon defense. Eventually, she dropped off a perfect dish to Maria Pagnotta who fired a strike into the back of the net for the only goal of the contest.

Campigotto minded the whole 90 minutes in between the pipes for the Saints, making one great save in the first and another two in the second half. Hearts were in in mouths in the 70th minute when the Wolves Erika Moreno struck a ball that nearly dipped to equalize the contest, but the ball hit the crossbar and pushed back into play where to sharp backline for SMU cleared it away. Despite WOU outshooting the Saints 14-8, the sides were equal in their shots on goal at three each.

The Saints hit the road next week where they face the Wildcats of Central Washington (2-7-3, 1-5-2 GNAC) on Thursday, October 13th. Kickoff is set for 3 PM at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg.
