BELLINGHAM, WA. – The Saint Martin's men's soccer (2-8-2, 2-3-1 GNAC) continued their run of good form Saturday night, but their unbeaten streak came to an end as No. 20 ranked Western Washington (8-1-3, 4-1 GNAC) down the Saints by a score of 4-3 courtesy of an 84
th minute winner from the Vikings.
It was an inauspicious start for SMU who allowed a goal just ten minutes in, but the storyline all day was the responses from the Saints. For every Viking blow, there was a reaction from Saint Martin's in terms of better play and eventually an equalizing goal. In the 31
st, the first response was recorded when
Angel Alvarado-Fajardo had a great throw-in to
David Settle who linked up with defending GNAC Offensive Player of the Week
Ethan Jud to fire it in the back of the net. It was exactly nine minutes and 58 seconds later that WWU fired another shot in to make it 2-1 going into the locker room for halftime.
Early in the second half, the Saints were on the offensive, working the ball into the penalty box and eventually drawing a foul on the Vikings to earn a PK.
Diego Andrade calmly nestled the ball into the lower right corner to tally another on the scoreboard and make it 2-2. Another response came back from Western Washington, as the Vikings pounded one in from a corner to go back up by one.
The final goal of the contest for the Saints came from a combination of players that we've seen plenty in this season, just not in this way yet. Andrade launched a sparkling cross across the mouth of goal while Settle was waiting on the back post with a towering header to pop the ball in the back of the net as SMU once again equalized the contest. Only six minutes later, the Vikings had a header find its way in as what would turn out to be the winner.
The Vikings are back home on Thursday, October 13
th against the Yellowjackets of MSU-Billings (2-6-2, 0-3-2 GNAC). Kickoff will be at 2 PM at Saints Field.
