HONOLULU – Saint Martin's four-game win streak comes to an end as Chaminade bests the Saints in an overtime nail-biter, 107-97.
Head coach
Aaron Landon takes accountability and reflects with, "Credit Chaminade, they shot it well but more than that they out-competed us tonight. Their guards were fantastic and dominated the game. Our aggression level wasn't where it needed to be and that's entirely my fault as the head coach. I'll take full responsibility for tonight's outcome."
Kyle Greeley set his season-high in points with a 28 point performance and a side of six rebounds.
Hunter Sipe (16) and
Christian Haffner (14) were locked in from beyond-the-arc, contributing four deep balls each and
Tyke Thompson rounded up the double-digits crew with 10 points.
Nathaniel Stokes led the team in rebounds with seven to go along with his five points and
Branden Bunn was the assists leader with five to complement his nine points.
No one knew quite what to expect from this matchup of Saint Martin's (9-2, 2-0 GNAC) and Chaminade (5-6, 1-4 Pac West ) but the game was well worth the price of admission. The two teams traded blows early before the Swords jumped out to a 22-12 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the half behind a 19-5 run. The Saints responded with a 17-8 run of their own late in the half that was capped off by Stokes draining a midrange fade-away at the buzzer to send the Saints into the break with some momentum and a manageable 44-40 deficit.
SMU opened the second half with a 13-6 run to give themselves their first lead since early in the first half. Chaminade used some phenomenal long distance shooting to retake the lead and with just over six minutes left in regulation, the Saints found themselves down 10, 76-66. Greely scored 10 of the Saint Martin's late 15-7 run to tie the game up at 81-81 with under a minute left. The Swords made a three to regain the lead and after a timeout by the Saints,
Christian Haffner laced a three with 12 seconds left to tie the game back up at 84-84. Chaminade missed a chance to win the game at the free throw line with two seconds on the clock and the game went to overtime.
The Swords opened overtime with an 13-3 run and despite a pair of threes from Haffner and Sipe, SMU couldn't close the gap and lost the game 107-97.
Both teams put on a jump shooting clinic as SMU shot an impressive 54.5% from the field and 42% from deep but were bested by Chaminade's 19 made three pointers on a ridiculous 57% from downtown.
The Saints will shake off the loss and look to win the last day of their Hawaii trip tomorrow against Texas Permian Basin at 5:30 PM. Live stats and video will be available on smusaint.com.
