Saints’ VB Extend Win Streak to Nine Games; Karla Soto Named SMU Tournament MVP

LACEY, Wash. – After defeating Westminster, Saint Martin's volleyball heads in to GNAC play undefeated and with a nine game win streak.

The Saints (9-0) defeated the Griffins (2-6) in straight sets to close out the SMU tournament. SMU junior setter Karla Soto was named MVP of the SMU tournament after posting 141 assists and 39 digs over four games to lead her team in an impressive string of wins as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. Maddy Gooding (41 kills, .412%, 4 aces) and Abigail Halstead (53 digs, 3 aces) were named to the All-Tournament team.

After going down 0-3 to begin the first set, Emmy Hansen scored the first point of the afternoon for the Saints. Not much separation between the two teams the entire set, but SMU prevailed and won the opening set 25-22.

The second set was much of the same as the Saints and Westminster were neck and neck for most of the set. Saint Martin's used a late 4-1 run to close out the set 25-22.

In the third set, SMU jumped out to a small lead midway through the set but the Griffins rallied to trim the deficit to one at 23-22 but the Saints held on and won the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Gooding was the star of the show, leading the team in kills (13), aces (2) and blocks (2) to set a new season-high of 17 points for herself. Halstead set her career-high in digs with 19 in an outstanding defensive performance. Jennifer Soha had a solid outing with 11 kills and two blocks. Tia Allen also made major contributions with 10 kill and eight digs.

Soto set up her teammates with 43 assists and got in on the scoring herself with two aces and a block.

The Saints will begin conference play on Thursday, September 8 when they travel up to Alaska for their match against Alaska Anchorage at 8 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
