HAYWARD, Calif. – The Saint Martin's men's basketball team is off to another 5-0 start after going undefeated in the Pioneer Conference Challenge with wins Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay, the first by a score of 87-77, before a 74-72 victory over the host Pioneers.
It was another weekend dominated by
Kyle Greeley who had a double-double in game one against the Otters with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He was backed up in the contest by
Marcel Stevens who had 20 points off the bench including three three-pointers.
Kaden Hansen had 16, also off the bench, while
Jayshawn Moore chipped in 11.
Jaden Nielsen-Skinner facilitated the offense as he is akin to doing, with nine points and five assists.
In a battle with East Bay, who is receiving votes at the national level, the game came down to the wire with Greeley getting fouled with five seconds to play and knocking down both free throws in a tie game to allow SMU to escape Pioneer Gym with a win. Greeley had another outstanding game with 21 points and eight rebounds, while
Myles Samuels was the number two scorer on offense with 14. Nielsen-Skinner again had five assists.
"During this time of year, we're a work in progress like everybody else, but our guys found a way to win two games on the road against two well coached teams that have contrasting styles," said Head Coach
Aaron Landon, "All credit to our seniors, they led by example this weekend and created an opportunity for our new guys to step in and play to their strengths."
The Saints will head to San Rafael, California next where they will do battle with the Penguins of Dominican on Tuesday, November 21
st. Tipoff for that contest is set for 7:30 PM at the Conlan Center.
