LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's, led by
Kyle Greeley's 24-point performance, completed their regular season sweep of Western Oregon with an 86-72 home victory over the Wolves.
Kyle Greeley reminded the GNAC why he's one of the best in the business with an efficient 10-14 shooting night for 24 points to go along with his full stat sheet of five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
Tyke Thompson flirted with a triple-double and posted a monster stat line of 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Jaden Nielsen-Skinner showcased another masterful performance at the point with 14 points, eight assists and four steals.
Hunter Sipe was locked in on the floor and scored 14 points on 6/9 from the field.
The Saints (18-4, 10-2 GNAC) came out with the starting lineup of Nielsen-Skinner, Greeley, Sipe,
Branden Bunn and
Shakeem Alcindor. Alcindor opened the scoring for SMU with a crafty up-and-under layup. The Western Oregon (9-10, 6-6 GNAC) offense was locked in for the majority of the first half and held the lead for 15 of the 20 minutes in the first half. Saint Martin's was careful to stay within striking distance and with just over three minutes left in the half SMU used 12-5 run to close out the half and gave the Saints a 43-39 lead heading into the break.
Saint Martin's made their defensive adjustments in the locker room and were determined to hold the lead in the second half. The Wolves opened the half with a three and that was the closest they ever got to the head in the second half. At the 16 minute mark, the Saints used a 16-7 run to go up, 65-53, with just under 9 minutes left in the game. SMU kept Western Oregon at bay and secure the win, 86-72.
After making their adjustments, the Saints' defense was excellent in the contest as they forced 15 turnovers with nine steals, and held the GNAC preseason player of the year to just nine points.
Head coach
Aaron Landon was pleased with his team's defensive efforts in the win, "Tonight our guys really fought in the second half on the defensive end, and that generated great energy that carried over to the offensive side. Our guys made plays, they had a lot of freedom on offense tonight and I'm really proud of how they played together."
Next on the slate for Saint Martin's is Seattle Pacific at home on Thursday, February 9th at 7:30 PM. Live Stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
