LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's baseball team (5-12, 2-2 GNAC) took on George Fox University (7-11, 1-6 NWC) in a three-game series over the weekend. After taking the opening game 5-3, the Saints dropped the final two games of the series by scores of 5-1 and 14-1.
Game one was a well strung together performance of pitching from the starter
Justice Yamashita, winning pitcher
Sam McCauley, and the pitcher who got the save,
Blaze Wong. For Wong, it was the first save of his collegiate career as he pitched the final three innings. The trio struck for 10 strikeouts on the day including five from McCauley. Offensively, it was
Alohi Arecchi that scored the first when he stole home on a double steal with
Braeden McNally. After GFU tied it up, the Saints rallied in the fourth a fifth. It started with
Damon Ingram going yard for the first SMU home run at Saint Field.
Dylan McLaughlin followed that up with an RBI double, then
Brady Bean pushed McLaughlin across on an infield single. The scoring was rounded out in the fifth with a sac fly from Ingram. That gave the Saints enough of a cushion to hold on and get the victory.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 5, George Fox 3
Despite strong pitching coming from the SMU staff, the Bruins found the runs needed to get the win in game two of the doubleheader Saturday. Both
Mattingly Milledge and
Finnley Butler pitched two innings without giving up an earned run, while started
Cole Hatton had three strikeouts. The lone run for SMU came in the eighth when Ingram singled through the right side, plating Arecchi.
FINAL: George Fox 5, Saint Martin's 1
On Sunday, the Saints opened the scoring before a tidal wave of Bruin offense turned it into a convincing victory for the visitors.
Reid Little scored
Jonathan Shimabukuro in the bottom of the third amidst heavy rain that persisted throughout the contest. Slippery conditions made fielding difficult for Saint Martin's so due the six defensive errors, the Bruins scored six unearned runs. Starter
Nikki Scott allowed just one earned run in his 4.1 innings.
FINAL: George Fox 14, Saint Martin's 1
The Saints take the road next week where they will match up with MSU-Billings (7-11, 1-3 GNAC) in the Big Sky State. First pitch on Friday, March 17
