Impressive Defensive Performance Leads to Draw for Women's Soccer

SMU Women's Soccer would draw against MSU-Billings on Saturday, October 12th, 0-0.

LACEY, WA — Saint Martin's Women's Soccer (1-8-2, 1-3-2 GNAC) hosted the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets at Saints Field in a GNAC contest this past Saturday.

The Saints would come out ready to play, as they got an early advantage thanks to the efforts of Brianna Yamada, who would record two shots during the game. Yamada's aggressiveness would help the Saints set up three corner kicks within the first 10 minutes of the contest, but they would not be able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Saints would keep the pressure on the Yellowjackets, but MSU-Billings would eventually gain more control of the field, leading to multiple shots on the goal. The Yellowjackets would not be able to capitalize on any of their attempts, however, as the defense would pitch their third shutout of the season thanks to the efforts of Keilee Silva, who would play a full 90 minutes and goalkeeper Flavia Burrell. Burrell would have another standout performance with 11 saves on the match, bringing her total up to 21 in just two contests after their previous draw against Seattle Pacific on Thursday.

The offense would stay active with Ravyn Mummey attempting six shots and Eve Charles contributing two of her own. The pace of play would pick up as the Saints tried to pull ahead, but the Yellowjackets would also demonstrate their defensive capabilities throughout the match, with goalkeeper Claire Brogdon having seven saves over the course of the match. Neither team would find an advantage, and the game would end in a 0-0 draw.

Head Coach Derek Faulkner thinks the team is on the right track after back-to-back shutouts and is excited to see what the next step is for this team:

"It was a good weekend for us and the group defensively. Good teams get shutouts, so it was important for us to do that. Total team effort to keep goals out of the net this weekend. We had a bunch of different players step in and do what was needed. Also saw some exciting flashes of our attack. Overall, it was a good step forward, but I think we know we are still capable of more. So we will keep searching for that next level of what we are capable of."

The Saints will take on Northwest Nazarene in their next contest on Thursday, October 17th at Saints Field at 1:00 PM. Get tickets here.
