Women's Soccer Falls to Yellowjackets in Defensive Contest

SMU Women's Soccer was defeated by MSU-Billings on Thursday, October 24th, 2-1.

BILLINGS, MT — Saint Martin's Women's Soccer (1-11-2, 1-6-2 GNAC) traveled east on Thursday to take on conference opponent Montana State Billings.

The Saints would be put to the test early, as an offside call would set the Yellowjackets up nicely to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in just the fourth minute. Despite the early goal, the defense would shut down MSU-Billings for the remainder of the first half. Goalkeeper Flavia Burrell would tally five total saves on the day in her efforts. Keilee Silva and Payton Aselton would each play a full 90 minutes and help anchor the SMU defense. Brianna Yamada would put the pressure on the Yellowjackets with five attempted shots on the day, including quite a few in the first half to try to even the score. Aselton and Ravyn Mummey would also contribute a couple of shots a piece to the offensive effort. Despite the faster pace, the Saints would not be able to capitalize on any scoring opportunities until the second half.

In the second half of play, the Yellowjackets would once again find a crease in the Saints' defense early on. That goal in the 48th minute would put MSU-Billings up 2-0, but the Saints would find a response when Rose Ivanis scored unassisted in the 67th minute, marking her first of the season. Even with the additional spark, the Saints were unable to find another goal as both defenses would step up to close the game out, with SMU ultimately losing 2-1. Hinata Kojima and Callee Hill would attempt two shots each during the match with Taylor Copeland recording one of her own.

The Saints head to Seattle Pacific on Saturday, October 26th to take on the Falcons. Get tickets here.
